The Bio.Net project adopts the idea that biology databases exchange data in flexible but well-defined XML formats, defined by XML DTDs or schemas from various specification efforts. Bio.Net categorizes biological information into the following classes: gene annotation information, protein annotation information, homology information, sequence information, Ontology, and PubMed literature. Currently, Bio.Net supports the following XML schemas: SWISS-Prot XML schema for protein annotation information, Gene Ontology XML DTD and PubMed literature XML DTD. Bio.Net designs the following XML schemas: gene annotation information schema, gene homology information schema, and DNA sequence schema.
